so the strata council of my apartment in north vancouver is trying to ban smoking from the entire building, including in the suites. I'm a smoker so I'm obviously against this. I'm also the owner of my suite and I don't like the fact that the value of my place or the ability to sell it may go down due to the fact that no smoker is going to want to buy it in the future. anyone else had this problem and found a way to stop a ban from going through?

Does it work by a vote? would you have to move out if you lost?

That blows man. Vancity is becoming a boring shithole as time goes by.
You can't do anything here!!!
Bet in 20 years Vancity will be a popular retirement spot.

We have our annual meeting in a couple weeks. the motion has to get a 75% or higher majority of the votes to pass. I wouldn't have to move out but I would have to go out to the street everytime I wanted to have a smoke. All this because it is too big a deal for the people who don't smoke to close their windows when people are smoking on their own patios.
- crybabies... Non-smokers make me sick!!!
BTW...I currently gotta gtfo every time I need a smoke...VectorMasked - smoke make me sick, being obliged to support smoker's smoke make me sickgoygoygoy
- Smoke smells like shit, that being said if you own you should be allowed to stink your own place up.voiceof

your property value very may well increase with families wanting to be somewhere smoke free.
it's the way of the future. they're banning smoking everywhere.
It might even lower the cost of insuring your building cheaper which WOULD lower your maintenance fees, but that probably won't happen.
- It might even make the cost of insuring your building cheaper...
carry on.Gucci - That shouldn't happen.
I'd pay top dollar for a place where i could smoke.VectorMasked - touchematt31

Maybe this is your opportunity to quit?

that is bs though. it's your fucking house. you should be able to put a chinese fuck swing in there if you want to.
fuck. why not ban pets, stereos, children or anything else that makes noise? i don't see where it logically ends.
- Does anyone have a link where I can get a chinese fuck swing?Nematoth

Sell now while you can.

How the hell could you be out-voted from smoking in your own home? That just seems wrong somehow, even though i'm an avid anti-smoker. I love how my clothes do not smell after a night out now. Can't you somehow start a plague of robotic rats in your building?
- i know it seems ridiculous - that's why i was asking if anyone else has ever encountered thismatt31

the value may go up or down - hard to say. However, if i put it up for sale and there is a smoker who wants to bid above a non-smoking person on my apartment but they dont because they can't smoke - that would suck.

i would think being an owner that smokes devalues it more than the smoking ban.
and sorry but i have to agree, a balcony with heavy smokers is kinda gross for the suite above.

as long as you can still get your bong on

it is fucked - i might not be able to smoke in my apartment, yet the local and provincial government ignores the problems shown in the above photo. our politicians are some of the biggest hypocrites out there.

I don't understand how, if you're the owner, they can tell you not to smoke in your own apt? Seems fucked up.
- how would they enforce such a thing?Jnr_Madison

The politicians like to do *things*. not the right things, not the important things, just *things*. This makes them feel busy and important, and keeps them in the minds of people.
Because as we all very well know, there's really nothing they CAN do about the situation in the above photo. They can't really control people that don't want to be controlled... but those who want more control generally don't give a fuck about the people who really need help and focus on their BS problems (ie: my apartment is close to someone who smokes).
Smokers are treated like second class citizens. Crazy.
I don't even get how someone can be so close as to smell so much smoke that it impedes their everyday life or enjoyment of their condo. Unless you're sharing a bunk bed, that makes little to no sense.
