Here's the scenario, you have a list of documents in a web based content manager system and you want to quickly go through the list of documents and preview each. The two approaches that come to mind are:
-Previous/Next buttons to go through one at a time.
-Provide a list of documents, allow the user to select a document to preview and press the up/down keys to go through the list. Both have their weaknesses and strengths, are there any other good examples of browsing models with preview you could point me to?

it depends so much on the amount and type of content both parts would have to display (list/preview). can you elaborate on that?
e.g. list: title only or also meta-information (date/author/etc.)? preview: text only or image previews, if images: is the text supposed to be readable. etc.

ask.com-style rollover previews?

The best correlation would be an email program with the list of emails and a preview pane. Looking for ways to do it better.

the only thing I can think of would be to offer as many customizing features as possible. to give the user the controls for the best data-acces in regard to his presonal preferences/screen size/browser window size.
for the list view, e.g. a page directory w/ selection of how many objects per page the user would like to see. next page / prev page instead of scrolling. for large sets of data we always try to incorporate these ajax-instant search thingies (the entry "AN" would reduce the list to "ANamorphic", "bANzor", etc; not on a special "results" page).
also, don´t know if it fits the scenario, a zoomable grid is always nice: user controls the number of columns/lines by 0%-100% scrollbar. depending on the selection, larger previews/more metadata is displayed per object. good for seamless switch between overview/orientation-mode and detail view-mode.
