I’m not familiar with ice-hockey since I live in Australia, but is there some extra risk due to the strenuous nature of the game and the fact that it’s played in such a cold environment?
- usually something undiagnosed in someone of his age. either way...rip.moveinspace
- I don't think so, my best guess is an unknown heart condition or possibly steroids (but I doubt it).T-Dawg
- It sounds like it was not related to an on-ice incident. It's probably a heart defect that went undetected. He was an amazing young kid. RIPTHA
- Hockey is dangerous, sure, but it sounds like some genetic thing and/or a previous condition.Jaline
- They must have regular medical testing and exams? Could be wrong...Jaline

- I don’t need to watch this.MrOneHundred
- Sry if it's too much. i didnt put it up for shock value. i just thought some ppl might be curious to see what really happened to him. i'm a HUGE NY Ranger's fan & i've been pretty numb all day because of this tragedy. I know this Video might be too much more most.THA

This seems very familiar to me.

- That’s what I was thinking.MrOneHundred
- I remember seeing Roman Lyashenko with the Wolf Pack... didn't know he committed suicide :(ismith

damn.

"given the preventative measures in place in every NHL arena, it's unlikely that such an incident would have taken place in an NHL venue."
- epete220
steroids?
- Could be.Jaline
- Prob heart defect. kind of surprising how these can be missed, but tend to stand out more in athletesDocHux
- if he was a couch potato he might still be alive. crazy ...DocHux
- his name is at the bottom of the list you posted Jaline. It was commotio cordis.moveinspace
- or an impact to the heart.moveinspace
- Yup, I know. I just didn't want to rule out steroids...Jaline

Genetic heart condition for sure. But all the training these guys do have got to tax the system. Guys are so fit now compared to decades ago and yet there are more incidents like this today than in the past. Just makes you wonder if an athlete can be too fit? I played hockey all my life and can't buy the heart attack from a hit or cold weather.
- katekelly0
so tragic. and just 19...r.i.p. cherepanov
- mcLeod0
similar to what happened to the redwings jiri fischer a few years ago. it was my hometown team and I worked with his fiance so this one hit a little too close to home. fortunately he recovered.
it's sad to hear about cherepanov. crazy that these fit athletes still fall victim to these types of problems.
- matt310
this is terrible, i'm only guessing but he probably had a undiagnosed heart condition
