I'm thinking about getting a real camera (er, a good one at least, more than a point and shoot, but under a grand) but I really know nothing about it. Any suggestions for a beginner? I'll probably use it mainly for outdoor shots, close up food shots, that kinda thing. Help?

Not bad...so both the XTI and XSI are pretty good close up and far away? I honestly know nothing about lenses and all that...will I need to (or should I) get more lenses to go with it or is the one it comes with okay?

i wouldn't bother getting more lens until you have had the camera for a while.

best way of learning how to use a camera in my opinion is going with old stuff, 35mm/120mm. non digital cameras
in the long run can me more expensive. but then again, i love more the look and feel or traditional photos over digital. the grain makes a huge difference.

Canon Powershot S series. Great zoom, image quality, and super macro work. For the money, none better. Panasonic may be close.
