so wait, designers also have to pay for fonts? I thought fonts came as a package with the profession....
- Arial, Verdana, that thick, heavy one, the typewritery one, the little pictures...all yours..mikotondria3
- so, why would you use any other font?OSFA

that wouldn't make it right.
Maybe they have the licenses to use the fonts on shitloads of computers?
- to fyoucher1VectorMasked
- yes. as freelancer you may use the fonts, because you´re part of the agency for the period you are doing the jobmoamoa

Send him a copy of the font license and tell him that it was never part of the agreement that you break the law or provide software. If he is unhappy with this, simply state that you will be happy to select appropriate fonts that he already owns legally or that are available for free in place of the ones you originally suggested. That shouldn't take you too long... right?
They are not yours to give... Should you also provide a copy of photoshop for him to edit the psd?

Hmmm, weird. I freelance for a bunch of agencies and we pass fonts back and forth all the time, sometimes they even convert em' for me.

i don't know why people keep doing work with no contract. you should always do SOW for all projects if possible and have the contract signed.

Do whatever you think is best for yourself. I personally wouldn't want to give away fonts that I had paid for, but if you want to forge a relationship with this client, then it might be in your best interest to make them happy.
Unfortunately, it sounds to me that he is trying to take advantage of you. Maybe just send him some links where he can purchase the fonts he needs himself? It's all about what you want the outcome to be because you're not required to do anything. Not without a written and signed contract.

Yeah! it's always delicate for psd's.
My contracts were verbal only, nothing disclosed...
- tenpointtwo0
I wouldn't even have given the PSD
- OSFA0
what does your contract say?
- detonatein100
Same applies if your freelancing for other studios?

Besides...
I actually get the feeling that even if you give the fonts...
he'll just head to dafont.com and download a grungy font and replace for all the nice type you had on the menu bar
;o)

Fonts and typically creative source is NOT provided unless that is specified in the contract or a new arrangement is made (see more money).
Its like hiring a someone to design your new kitchen. You pay then for the plan and decide to do it yourself, then reviewing the plan you see that they planned to use a certain tool you didn't have. Instead of buying it, you demand the kitchen designer give you the tool because they own it.
- Well, not the best analogy, but you get the point.ETM
- Totally with you here... thanks ETM. Will send the invoice without any remorse.detonatein10

Cheap ass client... move along. Don't even waste your time replying or answering the phone for him. Honestly.
- pylon0
Ya, it's a little trickier if client technically owns the fonts — ie they're registered in the client's name.
- doesnotexist0
if you had him pay for the fonts, give him the damn fonts. if he didn't, then ignore his email and move along.

What Salisae said.
Send links, mention fonts qualify as software and as that they are protected and each user has to pay for the rights of usage.
Besides are you even charging for the psd file?? Services and actual source files are different things. As Sal said, you are just not gonna work with this dude again... so don't be afraid to do the right and 'legal' thing to do.
