Holding a needle and thread is about as alien to me as holding a space wrench in outer space... that being said, I'd love to try it out...
Has anyone else on here ever given this a bash, and what were the results like?

the closest i've come to this is directing a seamstress in the designs i drew up and it is really hard work..
what kind of clothes are you thinking of making?

My GF is a fashion designer – I make suggestions and she says "pffftt, stick to your graphic stuff". One thing I do know is that there is a lot of technical stuff involved.

I just want to alter dress shirts to fit properly, and perhaps try mucking around with some of my old clothing (a la http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to…) ...
Also, I got half a dozen tailored shirts and 3 suits a year ago. Since then I've shaved 2 inches off my waist, and put maybe 1 or 2 back on my shoulders, and now they don't fit quite right. I'm glad to be skinnier again, I'm just pissed I spent all that cash on clothes that don't fit properly now.

take your stuff to a clothes alterations shop or tailors.
they'll do little tweaks like that for a few quid.
theres no point in you even attempting to destitch your shirt then resew. you'll probably fuck up your shirts.

Since I started the gym 2 and a half years ago I've added 2 stone of muscle and got my waist down to 32" - makes buying clothes that fit properly very hard! My top half is XL size (UK) and my waist more like M or L so XL tops look really baggy on me (baggy clothes in UK = bad look). I'm handy with a sewing machine so I tried sewing up the sides on a few of my jumpers by a half inch and results were good and fit much better.
However I wouldn't even attempt it on a shirt, bad sewing would be really noticable, so I agree with 23kon, take them to a clothes alterations shop or tailors.
