If you're shooting fashion you will be needing lighting more than an extra lens.
Check these out. Cheap and they have a good rep.

Whatever floats your boat.
I'm just starting out, but a friend of mine went thru the whole phase of toilet-covert-to-darkroom, and had a few Leica cameras. Now he just uses a Panasonic Lumix LX-2. Only investment he made since then.... was a new battery.
Its all about (like someone else said before) learning how to use your tool. I've even seen shots done from phone cameras that are just simply brilliant. Don't get too stuck into the technological stuff, because Photoshop is there to back you anyway.

Did anyone mentioned yet you need to work on ideas and on basic knowledge of light and composition?

don't let it bring you down

Just take your camera out and explore the world around you. Take a lot of pictures, bring them home, and look and learn from them. Repeat.

"And if you do have a million, and you buy all the equipment you can, and believe me, i know people who do, you usually end up shooting shitty because you rely too much on your stuff and "all those possibilities" that it becomes supertechnical and very technically superb but often pretty boring.."
Or not..

to be honest:
I am not a big fan of "graphic deisgner" photographers.
