about font characters, how must be the font characters talking about wide, one of each one? there are rules since there is it with the x-height?

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t certain readability issues to keep in mind, though. You need to consider whether you want your typeface to be a text face which requires certain attributes to be considered over others, or whether you want a display face which “says” more in terms of style – but sacrifices readability to get that message across. It’s like any kind of design. Assess your audience, consider your message, consider your own tastes, all that kind of thing.
