a large, prestigious company is opening up a store in their establishment (sorry to be vague). they contacted me to come up with design concepts for their merchandise (tshirts, tanks, polos, etc.) to be sold in their store. after viewing my concepts, they want to go with 3 of them. any idea what to charge for this type of thing?

Think of the $$ and exposure they're going to get from your work.
It should depend on how large the company is, how much work you did, how many concepts you presented, etc.
It really could range from the high hundreds to the thousands without knowing more information about your situation.Refer to the pricing and ethical guidelines and see what they say in there that might reflect your situation.

congratulations don't sell yourself short. Why not ask what their customary arrangement is and vet that?

I would sit down and really think about how long it will take you to do the work. Figure that as your starting flat fee, then add 30% to the amount of time since things ALWAYS take longer than we expect.
Then do what Gucci suggests – consider the size of the company, the rough amount of attention and funds they throw into design work, and the level of publicity.
If I were you I wouldn't touch the project for less than $20,000, if it's as in-depth as you describe it.

to be honest, this did not take me very long, but the concepts are great and they are buying 3 of them. you know how it is with branding, sometimes it just comes to you without many hours being put into it. i am also going to work with the silkscreener directly to have them all produced so that takes time.
i am going to put it in perspective. let's say the tate modern (or any other huge museum) was opening up a store and you sold 3 concepts to go on their merchandise...
20k sounds amazing, but they may not go for it...

If you're doing everything for the store, from t-shirts to tags to displays, then $20k isn't that high. imho.

also consider how many they could sell and would royalties be more worth while? how long is this brand or apparel going to be on the market? ect ect

maybe ask how many shirts they are going to run - then add $1 per shirt x their run - then add your design fee on top. I've done this before. so as an example:
$1000 for design work
run of 1000 shirts x $1 each = $1000
$2000 for total job.- < if it's just t-shirts, this sounds about right to me.gramme
