Warning bells. Sounds like you'd be better off agreeing a day rate. If they baulk, politely say it seems like they are not prepared to be organized about it and it isn't professional to assume they can make changes ad infinitum.
Trust me if they don't agree or carry on in the same manner- STEER WELL CLEAR.
