Repair permissions, dump all caches, reset PRAM, leave it on overnight, and delete/transfer all rarely-used files.
- don't need to reset the PRAM.doesnotexist
- I do it anyway, it's just part of my cycle when things seem to be getting wonky.ismith
- permissions, good planredrum

My macbook has been So sluggish the past week. I check the HD and saw that I only had 40 gigs free. i deleted and archived a bunch of crap thinking that freeing up some space would make it fast again but that didn't do the trick.
Im trying to avoid reinstalling everything again cuz thats about a days worth. What else can be done? Is it possible I have a virus and how can I check if I do?
- 40 gigs?! I'm down to 20 megs... I really should throw in a bigger HD (MBPro).ismith
- shit, you really maxed outimnotadesigner

i don't know how to dump all caches in one full swoop, i guess it's a more tedious task.

You can use disk warrior, it was highly recommended to my by this mac guru I know. The program is not just for disk repair. Here's a link:
http://www.macworld.com/article/…
"While most people come to a program like DiskWarrior after they have experienced disk problems, the program is also designed for regular maintenance."

I like to run it once every week or two. Simple, simple configurations.

I just keep it clutter free, restart it and run permissions now and again. Did a clean re-install about 6 months ago when it started to get notably slower, worked a treat
