Hilary is obviously massively unpopular. People are fed up with mainstream politics, or at least they think they are - not sure so many will remain so if he does win. Whether you agree or not, he's cleverly identified / stumbled upon major issues for a huge slice of the electorate.
All he needed was a couple of policy details to round the edges off. All he did was repeat people's fears back to them. That's obviously enough for some people to believe he's going to change their lives - but think of all the votes he could have gained with just a little bit of rational conversation.
Imagine if hadn't alienated so many women voters with the menstruation line. Or implied (if not explicitly said) Mexican immigrants are rapists. Or instinctively mocked that disabled reporter.
Imagine if he'd managed to not be such a massive orange bell-end for just a week or two. And that's the thing. He couldn't. He can't. When the heat's on, he can't stop himself doing or saying something utterly mental.
He's deliberately deepened the divide in American politics, but he's (probably) put it about 2% the wrong side of the middle.
