MacBook pro won't start... spinning gear

I have a macpro and a macbook pro. the other day, my macpro wouldn't start up. The spinning gear comes up and nothing happens for hours. I tried to repair the disk permissions using the leopard disk, but got some sort of failure to exit notice and it wouldn't do the fix. I erased the disk and reinstalled my software but later that day the same thing happened. I took the macpro into the apple store and they said I had directory corruption and so they've zeroed out the hard drive. But suddenly now my laptop is doing the same thing! Identical problem. So, I'm thinking it must be a software issure. I recently installed a wacom intuos 3 driver but I had that installed previously and it wasn't a problem. I can't start the computer in safe mode either, nothing happens. I'm not able to access my hard drive this time either through my roommates computer. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a strong magnetic field that surrounds your living space?

I hear that it is pretty common to pour beverages on your keyboard and this same thing happens.
Have you poured any liquids on your keyboard recently?

pylon, That thread was started by my roommate who was trying to access my hd through his computer. As I said before, I've already erased and reinstalled. Then the same thing happened again. This time I can't access my hard drive through another computer. The icon isn't showing up!

I don't have a big magnetic field that I know of here. And no, I haven't poured beverages on both my computers at the same time.

It could just be coincidence.....perhaps you hardrive(s) is dying.

There is no way this is a coincidence. Identical problem happening within a day of each other...

directory corruption could be from a dying hardrive...run a scan and see if there are any bad sectors.

how to run a scan? from the leopard dvd?
- designbot0
probably...unless it exists in utilities somewhere....sorry I'm used to pc.
or you could reload the thing again and not install any software....see if you get the same problem. At least you could rule out a software issue. Also scanning both drives could help you rule out drive dying or failure. How about a virus?

DiskWarrior can rebuild the Directory from scratch. But sounds like you also need to use fsck (not Disk Utility)to check/repair the drive, in safe mode, booting from hard drive or DVD).
I think you are best to follow the procedures here (applies to 10.3.9, but I think procedure is similar):
