cannonball- believe it or not, until 2006 (I'm sure it hasn't changed) "Graphic Designer" was not a recognized profession in Brazil. In other words, in Taxes, applications, mortgages, passports, and all government documentation there you have to fill in "other" or "self-employed" under occupation.

Last month in the brazilian consuate I had to fill in my vote registration card, and the counter girl asked me my occupation, I said graphic designer she replied "it has to be in portuguese" I took 2 seconds to think about it, and she simply said "you know what? I'll just put down delivery boy" nah just kidding, she said "I'll just put down self-employed" It was so embarrassing.

it's pretty normal people with no design graduation working with design here in brazil.
my ex-boss was an old illustrator with great design skills.
