Portfolio sites are full of fancy photos of business cards at fun angles, posters held up by their corners, dramatic lighting and angles, things folded, etc...
Does anyone put those photos in their hardcopy portfolios instead of the printed pieces themselves? Have you ever opened someone's book and found photos of prints instead of prints?

seems like thats standard these days. not the actual pieces but photos of the pieces.

yes.... me me me
- you do the photos or the actual piece?pencilpants

somebody once came to us with a portalbe light table and photographs

That's what I'm wondering too. The blandest thing can look edgy with some sexy lighting and blurring at the edges, but at the end of the day that means you're a better photographer than a designer.
- a lot of the portfolio websites people cream over it's really the photography of the pieces they are responding toDr_Rand

why bother with the interview? can't they just go on your website?

I always photograph the piece and use that photo in my portfolio. carrying around different sizes of prints and posters and shit gets a little too much after awhile.

Why not scale big things down to fit your book? I've never considered bringing full size posters...

I would normally agree.... I prefer to see the material, colours and so on...
but its really annoying to put 3 crinkled Posters, 3 Magazines, 5 Business Cards, 3 Letterheads, 1 Book & 5 Flyers on a "maybe" small table... and say ... here, this my stuff...
I think you can show also specialities in print like good paper, stamps ..... on a good photo...

i roll with a hard cover published book of my work which i leave with clients for up to a month. i have a bunch of copies of each book, [3 different ones] and i circulate them.
worked nicely with the publishers.
- isn't photography a diff issue than designed pieces?Dr_Rand
- you're a photographer though. you wouldn't take a photo of a photo.doesnotexist

i mostly have photos.
but for some projects i love to bring in copies of the actual project. especially for my books and other small size print. the experience for a client of going through a book and stationary is always highly appreciated and they can see better the amount of work you put into them.

If you're going for photos, make sure you at least have some flats to show the work in full... nothing more annoying than a marco-shot of some corner with nothing to put it in context.

The website and the book are becoming one in the same. The interview is becoming a culture fit & general intelligence check.

I've been considering ditching a book altogether. But then i look through all the old pages that have been changed out and i get all sentimental.
