Don't worry about the weather, a scooter would be perfect in Melbourne. Take a look out when the weather is average - most of the bike riders wuss out and leave their bikes home - while the scooter riders head out in anything. The only time to look out (and it applies to anything on two wheels) is when it rains immediately after being dry for some time. The water brings up all the oil and crap that has been sitting on the road, and it makes it quite slippery. Learnt that the hard way.
I'll be looking for a Vespa S 125 come spring time.
And you lucky Melbournites can even park them on the footpath.

BTW - The only scooter riders to look down on are the morons that think "riding gear" constitutes shorts, a singlet, thongs, and an open face helmet.

I've had one of these for 7 years
I do 20 miles a day on it. I fill it up at the beginning of the week (£8) and it does me for the week. So much cheaper than the tube etc.
Things to consider. Don't get anything to Flashy unless you have secure parking at home and at work, otherwise it will get knicked. I've had an 2 lambrettas and a Ducati monster nicked (I did live in Hackney), so in the end I got something that would blend in. Second hand the ET4's cost £700 for a good one.
Something else to consider; those old bikes and the PX series are difficult to ride at speed as the engine is to one side of the bike, so unless you are experienced I wouldnt start with one of those.
Also dont get anything that's 50cc, they are just as dangerous as something quick.
but anyway they are the way forward. Although Westminster council have started charging to park scooters (cunts that they are) so expect everyone to follow suit. If that happens, I wouldn't bother.

nothing beats a 1970's P series, they're quick, they'll run forever and they do pretty good on gas.

Piaggio's are also very reliable, yet much more expensive. Quite like the BV500.- I'm taking a trip to Taiwan in March to check out the possibility of importation/dealersh...********
