eBay/PayPal problem.

My wife sold a purse on eBay a couple of months ago for about $250. The buyer paid and left a positive feedback. A couple of weeks ago she got an email from PayPal saying the buyer said the payment was unauthorized, so PayPal took the $250 out of her PayPal account. The investigation is still going on but surely the buyer doesn't have a leg to stand on? She paid and left positive feedback, how the fuck can she say the payment wasn't authorized?

Oh, and we use my wife's PayPal to send money to my PayPal, so I can withdraw to my UK bank account to pay my credit card. Now we can't do it as we'd need to bring the PayPal balance up to zero first (about $450 including the cc payment). I'm tempted to charge PayPal the overlimit/late fees for the card but the bastards probably wouldn't pay it.

Same thing happened to me. Money had cleared before paypal informed me that the payment wasn't authorised. I didn't give the money back and nothing has happened. The buyer didn't make any further claims. All paypal said was to be careful when selling etc. My paypal account remains in the negative. Pretty rubbish.

But I can't understand how the payment can't be authorized if the seller processed the transaction then left positive feedback? Are they trying to scam her? My wife hasn't received the item back so why should the buyer get it for free?

Yep exactly. I sold a mobile phone and had recored tracking. The buyer signed for it etc and saw a signature online as proof. I got the sellers contact details and phoned them and it turned out to be a fax number of a random company. I emailed ebay as well and they were no help.
Regarding the negative balance, you could always open a another account for paypal and use that one instead. Bit of a hassle though.
Sorry to hear that the same thing happened to you.

Yeah, surely eBay will rule in our favor? Otherwise it's madness! THIS. IS. PAYPAAAAAAALLLL!!!

My wife got an email from PayPal saying that the buyer's credit card company had charged PayPal a settlement fee for the unauthorised transaction. In turn PayPal charged the fee to her ($250) PLUS a fucking cheeky $10 extra processing/admin "fee". So now she's out $260 ($10 more than the item sold for months ago) and the buyer gets to keep the item.
So, lesson for the day? Buy your goods from eBay with a maxed out credit card, you might just get away with it.
Fuck eBay. Fuck PayPal. I've had it with them both.
