We're being made to start using Fireworks. We've been using Photoshop for the last 3 years I've worked here. Now all of a sudden my manager thinks Fireworks is better so we all have to use it.I'm pretty savvy with new software, but I'm just not as efficient in Fireworks. The Keybaord shortcuts aren't there, it's taking all day to achieve visuals I could do in Photoshop with a few strokes of the keybaord.
I know eventually I'll pick it up and I might be as qucik as I am in PS, but why must I do that?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I hear you on the keyboard shortcuts.. I hate using my mouse..

Tell him if you have to learn another bit of software you’re gonna have to punch his mouth loose.
- i like a man that knows the difference between loose and lose._salisae_

- loose loser? a pneumonic?_salisae_
- see? i screwed that up... i was going to say 'you looser' to show how dumb I am... ... oh wait... achievement!!!PonyBoy

I went to an interview on Tuesday for a web role and they only used Fireworks too - they said there wasn't any point in use Photoshop since its just for doing crazy filters...
- hahhaa photoshop filters. what is this 1997 ?erikjonsson

Somehow, I suspect the Marketing Department.

It's because you can do wireframes, prototypes and visuals all in Fireworks.
We we're doing fine without it...

Fireworks is more popular than you think.
I know for sure a lot of big design studios round where I am use it.Its good for laying things out and mocking things up quickly, has a heck of a lot of issues and weird little things though:
- Fonts don't show up in the menu sometimes
- Font names are different
- Doesn't support sub fonts (Selecting Helvetica then selecting the bold/heavy versions from a different menu)
- Resizing is destructive
- Gradient Handles can go missing sometimes
- Grouping groups of objects with blend modes together can sometimes lose the blend modes"Paste appearance" is an ace shortcut though
We use it where I am, but I use Photoshop for things like cutting out/making textures/etc then just lay things out in Fireworks

I haven't touched fireworks in years and really don't miss it.

stick with it and in a couple of weeks I think you will love it. It's so much quicker for layouts than photoshop. It's really intuitive once you get used to it.

I'd rather use Fireworks than PS. Much quicker for layout and design.

Just had a guy show me the ropes in FW and it blows PS out of the water. It's like combining PS with the efficiency of InDesign and features every tool a web designer could want.
Sold.
- when you say it like this i know its all in the clue less middle managment.erikjonsson

is this a joke?

fireworks is good for slicing and animated gifs and that's about it

There's a lot of stuff it does geared directly towards UI development for web and flex apps. I'm actually taking a portion of my week next week to take a lynda.com class on it.

I find fireworks far more efficient for designing web layouts than photoshop.
