When designing sites is there a width that you think of as standard? I normally work to around 800px but I don't know whether that's a bit outdated now?

I do 900px

yea thats pretty outdated.
I think 950x550(fold) is safe

Think of your audience. If your target audience are all using 800x600 computers (you never know) you'd have to go by that.
I think 1024x768 is a safe bet these days, and 900-950px accomodates that.

you can get up to about 950 safely for 1024.
still design some sites to 800 (760) depending on who the client is and who they see their audience as.
a lot of business to business is still at 800x600 as people are on crap PC's still in offices.
but if its for creative industries or for homeusers then bump the size up to 950 minimum.also worth considering is a collapsable panel , like a column down the right side that contains not-so-important info, then if browser is made smaller, it collapses to under the site into a horizontal panel.
