you can get up to about 950 safely for 1024.
still design some sites to 800 (760) depending on who the client is and who they see their audience as.
a lot of business to business is still at 800x600 as people are on crap PC's still in offices.
but if its for creative industries or for homeusers then bump the size up to 950 minimum.also worth considering is a collapsable panel , like a column down the right side that contains not-so-important info, then if browser is made smaller, it collapses to under the site into a horizontal panel.
