someone is singing about chickens and cocks - I wonder if he used to be a farmer or if there is a hidden message in there somewhere.
- I use the word "singing" in it's broadest sense

I wonder if anyone else pronounces them as "Da Voiv" in a vocal style and accent that attempts to emulate Max from Hart to Hart.
- man that's a memory. i used to love that show. freeway the dog rocked - all 40 dogs they went through...airey

Yo - anyone get the new album? Totally had no idea there was a new one out until I saw it at Target last night of all places.
Only listened to the first two songs in the car and need to put it on my ipod. But first song sounded great and it's getting great reviews!

I loved that band in the mid ninties, I still listen to their first two albums but I've never been one for big sing a long anthem stuff so I don't really dig out Urban Hymns that much.
The best thing about that band has always been Nick McCabe's sky scraping guitar lines. I really think he is one of the most under rated guitarists of the last 15 years - he plays with such amazing texture.
I saw them in 98 at some festival after he had left and they had the steel pedal guitar player BJ Cole and it was like watching half a band.
I've also not liked a single thing Ascroft has done solo and I'm worried that from what I've heard that stuff is gonna be prevalent on this album - is this the case?

- Verve EP is still my favorite.threadpost
- got to love BJ Cole though.kingsteven
- BJ Cole is fantastic, but I just felt that McCabe was missed on the songs that have 'big noise' as a part of them.Wolfboy

...I think Song for the lovers was brilliant...

I've tried to listen to their other albums but nothing can top "Storm in Heaven". Maybe it was just that time in my life but that recording is near perfect and was the soundtrack to at least 2 of my drug induced care free no job having summers.
- Oh yes man. Storm in Heaven is absolutely fantastic.stoplying

I've got a 'best of Glastonbury' cover CD from the NME from about 10 years ago and it has their recording of Gravity Grave that they finished their set with in '93 (I think). Absolutely amazing stuff, there's a bit where they are being told that they have only a couple of minutes to get off the stage and they crank it up and Ashcroft tells the crowd what's happening and it becomes like a rallying call, I think he's shouting something like "just two more minutes, you've got just two more minutes"
They were incredible live over those years, right up till the first split.
- that's on the EP that has the Pinball Machine on it toofooler2

this is the one I was thinking about:
I saw them a couple of year later in 95 at Glastonbury and and it's one of my favourite gigs ever. Nick McCabe's amp blew for a couple of songs and they kept going with just the rhythm section and Richard Ashcroft and the crowd just got into it.
It was perfect weather for the middle of a heat wave. See for yourself:
- Make it til Monday is one of their best songs ever. This version is badass.amongthemasses

Thanks for the download link. I like it so far but the end kind slows down to much at the end. Especially during "Appalachian Springs" which has an annoying talking pop up window voice in it. I first thought I had an internet window open but I closed everything an rewound the song. It's right at the 2:22 point in the song. Is it suppose to be there or is this a security type overdub in the leaked file?

I saw em live few months back

whats the new album like?
ive heard a couple of songs briefly in the car on the radio
must admit - not that impressed and doesnt seem much of a patch on the likes of their early stuff.got a funny story about "the drugs dont work"
when i was in a band years ago, the singer and guitarist were massssive verve fans (our stuff was kinda like a cross between the verve and the stones sound). they had got a bootleg tape from a gig that had the drugs dont work on it. they worked out the chords and it became a song we'd play occasionally at gigs. i loved it as a song - and as far as i knew all that time; the singer and guitarist had written it ( i didnt know it was a verve cover ).
Then about a year later, Urban Hymns came out. I got it the day before release - a very excited bunny! got home, gave it a listen and my jaw hit the ground! "theyve stolen our song!"
I phoned the guitarist and was like "theyve stolen our song!"
- "nahhhh! i thought you knew that was a cover!"- not much like their early stuff at all. it's a move in a different direction IMO it's so-so.Gucci
