Great Names

I am about to launch a design company. But I have not yet nailed down the name. I have filtered the names down to two very powerful yet very disparate names. I have literally gone through hundreds and hundreds of names, and what i have learned is it comes down to intention and purpose of the brand. So my question is, do you think a universal brand that is less poignant to a "hipper" demographic, say like, Apple, is wiser. Or do you feel it is more important to challenge conventional norms with names like, Mogollon-which I absolutely love-to have a very effective attraction to my target demographic.

I resent anything hipsterish, by I have learned that we are all bound by these demographics whether we like it or not. So the objective is to be a sorta tastemaker in the younger 20-35 demographic.

I guess the product precedes the name. I mean, Im sure "Apple" was as hipster as you can get when it was initially slapped on the side of computer.
- the name apple aren't hip, its the product that have shaped the brand.akrokdesign
- but at the time, that name was really unique in that industry.. its a big factor.ribit

Actually, it was very un-hipsterish. Very nerdy computer culture in the beginning. The name “Apple” came from the idea that A is the first letter of the alphabet and Apple is generally the first word taught in school – “A is for Apple”. It was all about learning from the beginning again.

Actually Steve jobs was a huge fan of the Beatles; fell in love with the name of the first record label to release James Taylor, and always new he would use the name in some way shape or form (the same way all of do). When asked about the reason for its initial concept he decided to conjure up worth-nothings about Sir Isaac Newton.

Make it as weird and cutting edge as possible and people will think you are smarter than them and ahead of your time.
