Are low-life gap year high school leavers who haven't studied design yet but pretend to be a designer?
That is, people like myself?

Studying design doesn't make you one tiny bit more talented, but it does slightly increase your chances and ability to make a living from designing things. It does, if all goes well, allow to you learn how to develop the craft, but after a few years in the real world, it's of no real consequence, like everything vocational one can study except perhaps for something like medicine or law. Anything else is pretty much pointless by the time you're in your late 20s. Have fun, study what you like and what excites you, make a career doing something that similarly excites you, whether it's what you've spent your work-avoidance years doing or not.

In response to your initial question GORADIO, not many. Or not many that are willing to admit to it. Or not many who are online at this moment in time. You are alone. In the wilderness. Like an injured deer on a misty evening in Wolf county with howls in the distance. Paranoid after smoking a fat one.

- ..look, in the distance. Those lights are a police car, got to be. If you hide, they'll find you, and it'll look worse. Here they come..mikotondria3

i think the trick is to work in a small town where the clientele don't have many well-educated alternatives. and don't realise that you're trying to charge the same as a well-educated alternative.
but i'm not that rubbish, i promise.

There are a few strong designers out there with no design school experience.
