House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House and turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

oh those rude democrats

pdate 6: Rep Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) just pretended to be a Democrat. He stood on the other side of the chamber and listed all of the GOP bills that the Dems killed.
He then said, "I am a Democrat, and here is my energy plan" and he held up a picture of an old VW Bug with a sail attached to it. He paraded around the House floor with the sign while the crowd cheered.
Mature much?

Like the minimum wage bill that the democrats couldn't vote on for 8 years... both sides operate in this way.
- Agreed - both sides are in the pockets of large corporations - the system is a mess.
digival - which corps are the democrats in the pocket of exactly?mrdobolina

I'm sure Cindy McCain is being loved by the cubans right now.

I know they think this is a winning issue but honestly, the problem with our addiction to foreign oil isn't that it's foreign...it's that it's oil. And by the way, once oil companies drill that American oil, will it stay in America? Of course not, it will be sold on the world market. You want to trumpet American oil, fine, make sure it stays in America. They'd never do that, of course, because their buddies in big oil won't let them.

Both sides in Congress are despicable, with occasional – and usually short-lived – exceptions. These charlatans, especially McCain and Obama, go to work when they feel like it, are overpaid, and forget who they work for. (What other workplace would put up with this crap?) And we stand for it.
That being said, it definitely does suck that they've decided to take their big fat vacation without resolving this issue.

off shore drilling will not solve the problem, so there was no issue to resolve.

- You're right – we just need to make sure our tires are properly filled! hahadog_opus

In the mean time, guess who just broke their own record for the biggest corporate profit in history?
- mrdobolina0
the oil companies have permits millions of acres of land to drill on shore, but they don't. Now they want access to drill off shore. Can you not see that this is a grab for more permits?

Right Bryce, that would be protectionism, but Republicans make it sound like drilling HERE will make some kind of difference for Americans. It won't. They are exploiting people's misunderstanding of the issue for votes.

Seriously, it is really hard for me to get over the fact that the people that run the show act like such goddamn babies all the time. The us-against-them attitude of congress pisses me off to no end.
Here's a thought: take that nice pay, benefits and pension and get some fucking work done.
- Yup. And we, the people, feed into the binary idiocy. Demonstrated here every day.dog_opus

ExxonMobil made 11,68 billion USD. GM lost 15,5 Billion in the same time.

Here is a great letter to the editor that explains it pretty well:
================================...
President Bush and John McCain are misleading the American public about oil drilling and the cause of high oil prices. They allege that Democratic Congress and environmentalists have caused $4 gas prices because of their opposition to lifting the "ban" on oil drilling. There is no "total" ban on drilling offshore or in Alaska. Today there are 9,892 unused permits to drill on public lands. Off American shores a similar situation exists. Only 10.5 million of 44 million acres of federal land are producing.Oil and gas companies hold leases to 68 million acres of federal land and offshore waters that are not producing. Current inactive leases could double U.S. oil production. That is six times the estimated peak production of ANWR.
Then why are the oil companies not drilling? They have testified before Congress that they have a shortage of drill bits, skilled personnel and offshore platforms, which prevents them from drilling current unused leased sites.
Bush and McCain have two motives behind raising the oil-drilling issue. One, transferring the reason for $4 gas to the Democratic Congress. Two, enriching the oil companies with additional drilling leases which they can exercise at their pleasure in the future.
