Ze wife and I are going to talk about our options tonight. We had our minds set on Scotland but maybe we need to have a backup.
Charity, eh? Haha. I wouldn't be able to live with the guilt. I tapped my parents for the last $1500 so they don't have much else to give (they're retired). I might give Billy Gates a ring and see if he'll help out.

Why don't you move to central NJ (where you can find an insane amount of apartments for extremely cheap -- decent shit for even $900) and just commute and work in NYC? There's an endless amount of design jobs here, and all of them will pay substantially better than Philly. Seriously, you can stand to save a lot of money living in suburbia and just biting the bullet and commuting for a bit.

Actually, I commute to NYC from Central NJ. I'm most of the way out on the NE Corridor line, and it takes a little over an hour most mornings to get into the city. As long as you don't have a bad subway ride, there's worse fates.
Oh. I know you said "your wife doesn't like to work," but this is one of those cases where she needs to buck up and contribute to the financial welfare and general sanity. Even a part time job bringing in a couple hundred a month will help your finances.

Ever thought of a jump to Cincinnati? Its a huge branding firm hub with firms still hiring, its relatively close to Indy, and its affordable so you could hold out there til you were out of the red then move on.
Just a thought - jumping deeper into debt when starting off somewhere new is a bitch.

Fuck, toughy. But 100% correct. I won't be a biatch no mores!

if you really need money, there are ways. i know that is vague, but its possible. your work is really good, i know you are a print designer and you guys generally dont make as much. however, update your skillz to include some interactive stuff and command a higher salary?!?!

Yep. I take Academy bus straight to port. I'm moving again though in a month near Rutherford, only about 25 minute bus ride from the city.
Seriously, if you even relocate 45 minutes outside of NYC, you can land some seriously great deals. I really don't see why this isn't an ideal solution to your problems (if not temporary). Unless you really just hate the tri-state area that much. :P
- It's definitely an option. I'd love to work in NY.5timuli

Another problem I have now is having the time and money to interview anywhere else. I have absolutely no money or credit left so I'm stuck.
I'm such a whiner.

You could set up a donations page and if everyone posted their user name in the payment instructions you could keep track of it.
- i tried this before and ended me just sending money. and about few months later, i got a book, how nice was THATMrDinky

yes, and remember, send me files not urls.
also maybe try to create some prints. we are in need of camos, stripe patterns and geometric patterns at the direct moment.
the big push for the coming markets are all about prints and patterns.
can you create repeats?? this is the most important!!! i mean anyone and anyone can make a graphic, you just start with a circle square or triangle, but not everyone can make a repeat. i am one.
i can not create a repeat pattern, although i dont care to either.
its not my profession. but for you it can be.also dont send somethign we may have seen done in the past.
an example... a camo print can be many things... it doenst have to be cloud shapes... why not show something much more dynamic like perhaps "spark-plugs" to me that would be so cool!!!! or something else.
another example is this.. NIKE HAS A BACKPACK ON THE MARKET THAT CATERS TO ITS DEMOGRAPHIC CONSUMER.
its an all over camo-print but the image used is a bunch of guys running and the backpack is catered to the sports industry, its so very subtle but its also very saleable.
bring me something like that, something that is fresh and new.
if you come with cloud shapes i will just trash your resume and prints and not even consider you at all.you are entering a very competitive realm where the designers we hire bring this great newness daily without question...
be that, or be more than that!!! i know you can do it!!!
DO IT NOW!!!!
or else i ll call you a BIATCH!!!!!!

sell a laptop, replace the carpet, loan out the dogs, move into a month to month smaller cheaper place, drink some vino, then make your decision. Best of luck

Just sent you an email about a job opp. here in Philly, check mail...

So, um, here's a little update.
SInce I thought I was moving to Scotland I told my apartment complex I wouldn't be renewing the lease. Since things changed I went back in to renew, but they'd already let out the apartment. I now have two weeks to find somewhere to live. Except I have no money and all the shitholes around here are fucking with my patience and asking nearly $3,000 before I can get anywhere. It's either that or live in a cramped shithole on the corner of Stab Alley and Shotgun Street.
Fuck this place. Fuck. It. I might just quit everything and head back to live in my sister-in-law's basement in Indianapolis (not a joke).
- sorry i didnt read this till after i posted all. best of luck.
-ee-pill - Are you getting a deposit back from where you are now? I always forget about mine - good luck man.blackfrancis

Dude, It sounds like you need some help. I'm also a green card holder in Philly. Your work is solid and you shouldn't be having any difficulty getting work. My advice to you is to start updating your resume on Monster and Carrier Builder. Both are pretty good for recruitment agents to start hounding you down. Secondly start looking into 6 month contract gigs with high salary's. Thirdly you should move to west Philly....its totally more bang for your buck. Fourthly whats hourly rate for freelance? Fifth the wifey needs to get a job asap. Even if you do look into moving back to England you still need some dosh.

i just read the initial thread post, and all i can say is why not just move to NYC, why go all the way to UK for an interview when NYC has plenty of work.
i can only say, best of luck.

I think your first priority is to reduce your debt. $15000 isn't exactly a small amount. Not sure what kind of interest rate you are paying on it but with compound interest on the amount you own, you are getting really screwed.
even though the economy here is weakening, there's still a fair amount of work out there, especially in digital media. maybe you need to find a way to get more projects outside of Philly? Reach out to NYC and see if you can score some off-site gigs?
