I'm looking to buy a MacBook Pro 17", is it worth buying one now, or does anyone have a heads up on a new model coming out in the near future?

dont get a 17" traveling with that size is very annoying.
get the 15" with a separate and very much larger flat panel.

ditto on e-pill.
And, if you get a 17" anyways, don't say that it's better than anyone else's 15", because it's not. I have a friend that does that. Annoying.

I've got a 17", my wife has a 15". no problem at all to travel with, and you hardly need an additional monitor.

dual ditto on mg33
17" laptops are just plain bulky and nothing better on it.
make sure you get a "matte" screen and not a "glossy"the glossy is near impossible to colour calibrate.

17 is like for semi-desktop placement.
+1 on the 15" with the external monitor.

It's not that hard to carry a 17" around, but it's probably a bit easier to just get the 15". Less hassle to use on planes, while travelling, and it may be lighter.
I personally like the glossy screen, but I'm a web developer, not a graphic designer or someone who absolutely needs the colours on the screen to be perfect. I also never use my laptop outside, so no reflections or anything else that may bother me. If you're a graphic designer, I think you may want the matte, but the glossy does look really nice.
If you need one now, buy one now. Otherwise, check the Mac Buyer's Guide to see if you may want to wait a little longer:

Thanks everyone, much appreciated!

there was a big refurb price drop 2 weeks back ($200). I had my local reseller beat their price. May be sign of new laptops tho.

15" MBP + 23" ACD is my set up. I use my MBP in a clamshell mode at home.
A 15" MBP alone isn't too bad to travel with, but taking a 15" MBP, DSLR camera + 2 lenses in my backpack gets annoyingly heavy.
there's a rumor going around that mac laptops and ACDs are getting redesigned. If I were you, I'd wait till Sept.

wait. possibly some hot'ness coming from Apple this fall.

You might want to wait a few weeks after reading this.

I swear to god, these must be Apple employees putting spin on the new MacBooks.

i have a 15" mbp and i'd rather have a mb air...i use an external screen when i'm @ home and keep the laptop open for two screens.
i find the 15" even too bulky to travel with and i wish i'd have something smaller. that's just me however...
