i really like the concept of the second one, the treatment of the text with the outline and a delicious image of the strawb n chocolate.
with the text, what about a more french looking font. something like this ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/mul…
in fact id rip that completely.
but do the text like you have in the 2nd logo - it would give it a more "dunkin donuts" friendly feel.
and id make the illustration of the strawbs bigger - again ... think "dunkin donuts" in the styling of the illustration.
could be a winner!

Thanks so much everyone, you guys humble me with your design chops. Its been a while since I did a straight up identity project. The second logo is the current one that she hates that I'm trying to replace and most every company like this uses the chocolate dipped strawberry so I'm trying to avoid that metaphor.
But you've all given me a ton of things to consider and I will head back to the lab with the shape and font. Thanks again to everyone! You're all better than rock star designers, you're recording industry exec designers.

The chocolate dipped strawberry is visually delicous, you should stick with it in my opinion

Ouh shit. The font is horrible. The mark does not go with the font and it's unclear what it is. Start over. Make it tasty and sweet.

I agree with epete. Keep the strawbs as they will make peoples
mouths water - even a stylized illustraton. Even if you don't use it in the logo keep it as part of the identity

I know this thread is older but did you end up delivering the .AI to your client or just an eps or pdf? I got my first logo design for a client and wasn't sure if I should keep all the files or just be generous and give it all to them so they can use it for different collateral. I think they will end up wanting a lot more work out of it so I was thinking of not making a big deal about it anticipating other jobs from it.

ATTN: Tark,
I think you should give them an .ai file.
