we're allowing users to download and send the videos they're watching on a site we're creating.
for the downloadable version which file format would be suggested - .mov or .wmv
i saw a Samsung site that used .mov but haven't seen other examples since.

.mov since its more universal, .wmv is just a crappy Windows Media Video...

or give the option of both.

i'd say .mov too, agreeing with Mallmus.

go with wmv....mov is not more universal. There is a wmv plugin for QuickTime on mac that will automatically prompt them to download if the user does not have it. Quicktime sucks, and way more people use Windows Media Player. If you want to reach the largest audience possible, it's a no brainer.
- What about mpeg4? That is what I would recommend over both mov and wmv.designbot

Depends on your audience. wmv for your general audience which would most likely be PC users. QT if your audience is comprised of designers.
Or you can offer both options.

mov or MP4
can shove it on an iPod and other stuff, wmv is trash can't even scrub that junk in most programs and the quality is usually horrible,Sooner we bury that disaster of a format the better

I say both if you can but if you have to make a choice *.mov
