I like to open photoshop (colour setting Monitor RGB) and check to make sure I'm no blowing out whites or blacks.
--open blank document,
--fill white
--marquee a box in the center and ctrl+h to hide the ants.
--ctrl+m for curves and knock a point or two off the output. Do this is reverse for blacks (black background, add a point or two).if you can start to see the square after 2-3 levels, you're good to go. (some monitors just can't do +1/-1). if not you may need to adjust your brightness/contrast until it's within range. Try 25% bright and whereever the contrast needs to be to work... step up brightness until you're not losing your shadows.(you may need to tone down contrast at this point)
if you don't have a calibrator puck, just stick with the preset white balance settings (6500K is popular).
and if all else fails: Adobe Gamma.
if it's for print. Buy a proper calibrator.
