..and then wonder if it's in a microwave safe container? And if it's not, do you then eat it all the while wondering what sort of noxious chemicals you might be ingesting?

did this once.
reheated pasta in a styrofoam container.
the microwave was ancient and when i pulled it out one end of the container was melted and curled up and fused with some of the noodles.i cut that part off and ate the genetically unaltered pasta

It'll be fine if its still structurally sound after microwaving. Microwave-unsafe materials either contain metals or they will collapse under microwaves due to high Hydrogen content. Microwaves wont cause anything noxious to be emitted... Microwave isn't heat, its a hydrogen agitator.

Won't non safe containers get insanely hot very fast in the microwave?
And even if so, maybe ingesting the non-safe food has the potential for a superhero origin.

cut a grape in half but not completely...make sure a teeny bit of skin holds the two halves together. but them round side down in the microwave and watch the blue glow.
