when i first arrived i took a studio apartment on the beach through craigslist and got a much better rate than a hotel.

think, motel 6 in long beach, on PCH. (pacific coast highway) are around $60-70. but then, your like 10-15min drive from the beach, and 30-40 mins to downtown l.a. :-)
