For those living in New York. Im about to move there, and was wondering whether the NYC environment helps or hinders the productivity and creativity of ones work.

I am also about to move to New York—having JUST come from there for a set of final interviews—and I must say, it is an inspiring fuc!^'n city, that's for sure.

Helps. Just take a short walk and you'll find inspiration. Garbage you find on the sidewalk, crap on the walls, all the different people you meet, venues, bands, clubs, restaurants, subways, museums, art/ads (good and bad) you find everywhere, etc. Carry a pad with you so you can write down your ideas. You'll find inspiration everywhere.

I've been here for almost 2 years and I'm actually getting quite sick of all the people everywhere all the time. they don't need an excuse to be here because the fact that it's NYC is excuse enough.
It's great to be here and work with other artists/designers, but I think for me at least the novelty has worn off.

Lots of wannabe designers in NY. So it is easy to get jobs if you have a good resume, and know how to speak.
You go to interviews and the kid sitting next to you has street wear on.

Many fine artists have been leaving NYC in droves over the past 5 years, the overall cost of living is driving them south to NJ, PA, DE, as well as loss of reasonably priced lofts. There is definitely a creative brain drain going on in NYC, it is a shame considering NYC is the creative capital of the world...

Advice I got from a photographer who once had a successful studio in NYC. For artists and designers, living in NYC can be tough because you tend to get your validation as said artist/designer from your environment (other designer friends, the image of being a NYC designer) so that you become caught up in the image of being a designer/artist and lose sight of the work.
For him moving out of NYC was the best thing he ever did for his work because he didn't have any other distractions. It is all about the work, not the hooplah.
Just food for thought.
