If this was the Canadian election or another country, rather than the U.S.A., it may actually get people to vote for the targeted individual. I remember when Kim Campbell had some ads attacking Chrétien and his Bell's Palsy facial paralysis, and while she said she wasn't the one in charge of them, she never apologized.
I say "rather than the U.S.A." because, historically, they lean more towards the right. Plus, The New Yorker is full of satire.

A better illustration for what they were trying to convey might have been something like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity dressing up paper doll versions of Barack and Michelle in the turban and militant garb. Or some other way to convey that this is a vision of the Obama's through a conservative lens
- I agree - they should have hired you to draw it:Dukit
- They could have at least called me and asked me what i thought. Their losslocustsloth

Well It really started the conversation about this topic. I gotta say I dislike it but it directs the conversation to a negative place and thats why. Nothing against the publication but their really out to make a buck off of some more negative seedier dialogue about people stereotyping and being biased

i don't really know what they're trying to say by that cover, or what the article actually contains, but at a glance it seems offensive to me

From an article in our local paper:
--------------------------------...
"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton."But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."
The magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are."
"The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another."
Republican John McCain's campaign spokesman, Tucker Bonds, agreed that the cover was "tasteless and offensive."
The Huffington Post, a left-leaning blog, said: Anyone who's tried to paint Obama as a Muslim, anyone who's tried to portray Michelle as angry or a secret revolutionary out to get Whitey, anyone who has questioned their patriotism - well, here's your image."
