Wow. I don't like the guy's politics, but that's kind of out of line – even if it's only being used ironically. I'd probably think it was funny if someone just made it and put it on their blog. Dunno.

*que all the rednecks and wingnuts who can't see irony to begin with to use this as some sort of srgument that even the idiots in new york see obama as a muslim terrorist with a blackmilitant baby mamma. Limbaugh will be rolling with this all day tomorrow. fuck you ironic upscale new yorker assholes

I'm sure they've been doing covers like this for a while.

I'll wait for the next New Yorker cover showing McCain all senil, drooling and in a wheelchair, while his wife is in the background trying to pull percocets and vicodin from some clueless doctors pocket. That'd be cool and like it will totally really happen. Right?

the flag in the fireplace is a nice touch.
Satire or not, this is just stupid. Unless as TBO says, they give equal time and do a mccain one.

Do Republicans even read The New Yorker?
- They will now.TheBlueOne

It's a rag aimed at people who're self-consciously intellectual enough to 'get that' sort of thing, so it's as much a snipe at the lower orders as it is Republican polarisation. That's the bit that annoys me. it's alright having a political pop, but doing it to knowingly rile the lower orders...?
- i have a terrible, stoner's, habit of repeating key terms in my posts.detritus
- aka I have a terrible pot habit.detritus
- i like the subtle "whore" you threw in there7point34
- not for any satirical or political sensibility but because the word makes me giggle so7point34
- heheh, I didn't even notice that!
"rag-aimed people whore"!
My newest insult. Brilliant.detritus

If all of americans where as smart as the upper 20% on the IQ scores (which isnt saying much in itself) then there would be no harm with this cover. Reality is though alot of americans arent bright enough or smart enough to see the cover and satire for what it really is, therefore you when you place the "Jim Bob" and "Sue Mae" conservative/republican/redneck... member factor into place, its a bad cover.
- I have a feeling that most New Yorker readers will get it.CyBrain

Do they have a headquarters we can send Frenchmen to climb on and unfurl nonsensical signs on?
- blaw0
In my opinion, running this cover is an asshole move. Sure, everyone's talking about the New Yorker today, and how often does that happen. But in the greater scheme of things, grade-A asshole move.

Yeah I agree with Blaw. Its a huge slap in the face at the wrong time for Obama, and his wife certainly does not deserve it.
- And she doesn't rock such a righteous 'fro at any rate...TheBlueOne

Dear New Yorker,
Your cartoons STILL suck.

I see this and I read:
"lets make some loud noise so people turn away and look at us for a second or two"
mission accomplished

obama's campaign is handling it just right, silly but so what is basically the response. in the long run it will serve his campaign by preemptiely making people dismiss the most outlandish of opposition rumor. ridicule deflates innuedo.
- its on the order of the cover of Obama in bed with Hillary they ran in December.capsize
