I just found out the last 24-hour diner in my hometown which has been there for forty odd years is closing down this weekend...all those late nights in high school, all those drunken college weekends at 5:30 am chowing on chili fries and burgers...all the sunday brunches...all gone, gone, gone, baby gone...
Yet McDonald's still stands. This universe stinks man. Stinks.

First world problem.

On the bright side, think of lunch with hedge.
- Dinner. And I haven't heard from him at all. One wonders...TheBlueOne

See... see... see what the ban on smoking is doing!?!
Actually, we have one of those still back home. Every time I go back I gotta hit up that place for $6 steak and eggs.

Everytime I visit my hometown, any sliver of character that it had is completely stripped away with mini-malls and chain restaurants.
- same here. good ol vacaville is a stip mall paradise********
- See! Exactly! And it's a human problem, not a first world problem...TheBlueOne
- I know, I was keeeding.brains

those things aren't gone, they'll always be there in your head and in time you'll remember them better than they ever could have been.

Don't worry.....America is becoming more like Europe (but in a good way) both Walmart and Starbucks are finally starting to lose business.
...things are starting to look up.

Luckily the legendary Pat's Hubba Hubba still stands...

My humble wish for the next plane of existence or alternate reality into which I am eventually flung:
No chains, no franchises. Anywhere, ever.- Well, I do like Trader Joe's...TheBlueOne
- Won't be necessary on that plane.harlequino
- They are not all bad....but yeah I hear ya.designbot
- harlequino0
Which diner is closing?
Been to Hubba's before.
- Thruway Diner in New Rochelle...TheBlueOne
- oh god yeah, I know that place. This does suck.harlequino
- It closes on Sunday apparently...TheBlueOne
- ...and where the heck do you live again?TheBlueOne
- Live in New Haven. But mom-in-law lives in Mamaroneck, plus other friends/relatives in the area.harlequino
- I also work in Tuckahoe, so I get around that whole area.harlequino
- Huh. I work in Mamaroneck....TheBlueOne
- Really? Thought you were in the city.harlequino
- Live in the city, work in the 'burbs. Do the reverse commute thing. Works.TheBlueOne
- Indeed. Perhaps a beer or rueben will be in order one day over discussion of Sam Ash freaks and other miscreants.harlequino
- dude...anytime...any freakin time...TheBlueOne

Mine hasn't changed all that much in 15 years, thankfully. In fact, most places here don't have success at all (except the McDonald's, of course) and end up closing within about 5 years. So we're used to change. I'll report again once I leave and come back.

I always think a thread called "sadness" is going to be about a broken condom. Oh well.
- lots of condoms broke on the way to and/or from this diner...even in the parking lot I'm sure...TheBlueOne

- I'd Photoshop that to say Fu-way but I'm lazy and out of time. So just make believe that's what I did to help cheer you up.kona
- ... you up.kona

Where I'm from in New Hampshire we have the Red Arrow diner, a place similar in its rich local history.
http://redarrowdiner.com/Apparently they have an add website now and a friggin jingle.
I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate. At 4:30 AM, this place becomes the Black Lodge from 'Twin Peaks.'

I'm sorry for you. This will make me cherish my Fleetwood even more.

WTF is that the Thru-Way in New Rochelle? If it is, that's the one I have fond memories of as well. Coming from Larchmont/Mamaroneck I had many a drunk night there as a youth.
- Yup. Closing for good Sunday apparently.TheBlueOne
- As long as this stays open though:

Right cannonball?TheBlueOne - Sal's is good. I always hung out at Nicky's by the Larchmont Amtrak. I went to Karate class around there.********
- Actually, I almost got into a fistfight at Sal's.********
- Hahaha..yeah my mom favored Nicky's. I liked Sal's better.TheBlueOne
- Karate class in that building by the train station, no doubt...TheBlueOne

This makes me think of something else. Different, but in a similar spirit I guess.
When we went to the movies the other night, we went to this small 4-screen theater that I haven't been to in several years. Mainly because our usual theater is just a couple blocks away.
But anyway, we walk in and it hasn't been updated since at least the early 80s. Movies and prices are listed on one of these message boards:I friggin love those things. You rarely ever see them anymore. Really makes me feel a certain special nostalgia, like I am going to see "E.T." for the first time. Goes real nicely with non branded soda cups with that orangey flower pattern on them.

Is the Nautilus diner still there? I skipped out of so many checks there when I went to MHS.
- Yeah..I hate that diner...TheBlueOne
- What year did you graduate??TheBlueOne
- I went for 10th grade back in like 1993/4 and then got kicked out hahaha.********
- Hmmm...do you remember the Mostly Music store?TheBlueOne
- I think so...
I did a lot of music shopping at Vinyl Solution******** - AH! I used to work at MM at that time....Vinyl Solution was better though..TheBlueOne
- I went back to my old house that I grew up in last year and the family that lives there now painted it piss yellow. I used to live near Tony's Nursery off the Boston Post Road.********
- live off the boston post road. these tag things blow.********
- Right behind Tony's Nursery.. the plant place********
