To all MBP owners/users - do you ever worry about how hot your laptop is getting if you don't use anything extra to cool it?
I realized on Saturday that istatPro was measuring in celsius. After thinking 'wow, this is great, temps are always in the 70s give or take' I changed to Fahrenheit and saw temps from 110 - 130. !!
I know they got hot, and I've started to open it up during use and still just use my external monitor. I hate being afraid of something awful happening from the heat.
Any suggestions on a stand, cooling device, something? Are these temps normal? Is it going to melt?

Do you always have the bottom covered or blocked off?

In iState... what thermometer are you using? 140º is relatively normal for the CPU, but the enclosure heat for me stays between 85 and 100º.

I use the Cool Feet.

its not really designed to clamshell use, the keyboard is a massive outlet for heat... not a great idea just to push that onto the screen and keep it there

I don't understand why you use it closed in the first place, you don't like have two monitors?
For one, raise it off the surface of your desk with something that allows air to get underneath. You can also use something like SMC Fan Control to turn you fan on as needed.

It depends 2cents. depends on what I'm doing at the time. I probably should use two screens more often. Make my 21" external the main monitor and use the laptop on a stand for 2nd monitor. I had to use it this way for a couple months while the clamshell mode wouldn't work after the 10.5.2 update/graphics update.
- iCurve would help get the monitor off the desk and at a somewhat even level with the 21".********

Turn off mirroring and use it as a secondary monitor. Put windows like iTunes and any instant messenger on that screen to get them off your main monitor. I use an old tin of breath mints to get the back end of the MBP up and off the desk. Just wait until the temp hits 160 and your fan goes into overdrive. 130 is normal.

I use my mb (13") in clamshell mode 95% of the time, never had any problems. I don't see how having an open laptop next to the large LCD screen can be helpful. A second standalone screen would be a different story..
