Looking for a typeface that's almost identical to Goudy but without the irregular stroke thicknesses and inconsistencies. Anyone know of any off the top of their head?

The width and x-height of Bembo is similar to Goudy, though it's design is more Oldstyle. Garamond is narrower than Goudy, and it's x-height is shorter.
Baskerville could work as well, that's if you don't need oldstyle figures.

My main problem is that the S is so narrow and the O is so thin compared to the R which seems really heavy. I've tried cuts from four different foundries but none are doing it for me. I even manually stretched and sized some characters but I'm still not happy.
I secretly hate Goudy too, maybe that's partly the reason why I'm having problems.

Galliard bears a passing resemblance in its openness and x-height, as well as shorter ascenders & descenders than other Oldstyles.

Sabon is fairly close too.
