I'm a brand/packaging designer that wants to move across to work on a more digital platform.. working with broadcast and interactive as a art director/brand guardian.. what are my options...
Back to school or change agency or start up on my own and learn the hard way?

The hard way is the easy way.
The internet, with a little effort, can teach you everything you need to know.

you have no experience with digital design. So how can you jump from newbie to an art director.
In the same way a print designer knows all about print processes and techniques a digital designer musts always have a great understanding of digital design with the limitations and also the possibilities particulary with new technologies. However, you dont need to know how to code stuff inside out.
You have to think of it like this. If you dont have a digital projects based porfolio to back up your experience and skills then how and why would people hire you as an interactive art director. Thats also the way in the freelance world unless you count on friends and familys for jobs.
Do some research into the local universities about maybe doing say a 1-2 year course part time. Then the time your not at school try to get work experience at various design companies. You will have no money coming in but if you are serious about moving into the field its really the only practical way. Well you could freelance on a few packing projects for some income.
But do loads of research before quitting your job.
- citizen art director's primary focus is the brand and communication. I agree albeit its messed up to not know everything but. I have seen others do that.Iggyboo
- Btw I disagree the best experience is first hand in the work field if you can get it. Do you know much money is wasted on school...Iggyboo
- and ever wonder why most of the professors you had in design school never went to a design college. at least the older ones.Iggyboo
- ..wasted... yeh keep going. Where in the post did I say first hand experience is not the best?citizen_h
- Thats why you have to do your research and make sure a course is picked on various reasons and reccomendations. Not all courses are great.citizen_h
- Actually, I work with interactive ADs who came from print all the time. They don't know shit but got jobs at major agencies. Goddamn InDesign files for storyboards.fyoucher1
