Custom interface/Software?

Hi all-
I am doing some signage and interior design for a retail space, and the space has a few 42" lcd monitors.Right now, my client is going to put live tv or a slide show on them, but he asked me if I could design an interface that would show real time info ( weather, stocks, news, etc) along with pre-produced video.
I told him of course I could, although I know I am going to have to farm the technical stuff out.
My question is what do I research, what is it called, who does it, and how much does it cost?

you want to look into Dashboard design. Thats what we call that type of thing.

i´d contact your trusted online-studio/flash-guy. basically it´s nothing more than a flash-screensaver with dynamic data-feeds.
