"We often ask ourselves, is it worth driving so far when gas is almost $5 a gallon?" said Ann Yu, the band's singer. "We spend at least 150 bucks in gas to (get to) a show, when there is no guarantee that you'll make any of it back.
"It does screw up a lot of bands on the West Coast, 'cause ... there are very few cities to play in under seven-hour stretches, which can be costly," Yu said."

bands seem to manage to tour in the uk...
If they're worried about no one showing they should fire their promoter...
- that's because you only have to travel a couple of hours from anywhere in england to find a city...GORADIO
- yeah maybe, but their petrol is a third the price of ours... So they can go three times as far...rupedixon
- It would be hard to fire the promoter. For many small bands, they are the promotervoiceof

Man, there are an insane number of bands traveling across the US at any one time that are lucky to have anyone show up at their shows. I totally feel for them.
Long distance, multi-week touring is always a goal for any band, but for ours I've never really considered it. Bands beat themselves silly trying to get big through touring when they're still at a relatively unknown level anywhere, even their hometown. For the last few years that's just never struck me as a logical way to "make it."
I've got a few friends' bands out on the road right now, supported by labels, playing cool venues, playing some horrible venues, etc. etc. and it's gotta be tough as hell to break even. They do it because they just totally love it. I love it to [playing live] just have a different set of goals I guess. I don't have the time to travel all over the US, not until someone else would be paying for it - and if that never happens, I'm totally content with never having done that.
