Where do you get the subjects of your art work from? Photos, still lifes, landscapes, life drawing, or completely from imagination?
I just read this book called Blank Canvas and most of it discusses using the first four. It then says at the end that making something completely imaginary is the most difficult way of creating art. For some reason when I think of making art it is almost always imaginary. I wonder if this is due to thinking about it from more of a design perspective.
Here is the book:

Art (Fine art) is easy to create something that is completely imaginary.
I find when it comes to design i have a hard time creating - like those cool looking collages of design elements, they look cool but i havent found a reason to use one yet because i was taught design was used to simplify a message - and if ur just making flashy graphics that's not my understanding of design.
Music is a good subject to start your art from since it evokes different feelings in everyone.

If it is really intended to communicate a message then I can see not wanting to clutter it unnecessarily. Otherwise a lot of collage type designs seem more just like digitial art.
