I don't think it will ever die, but as someone said earlier the larger business will always want original design. You also have to remember that there is a lot more things being designed today, I think a lot more people are getting things designed (original or template) today than they would have 20 years ago.
That being said HP just purchased or have agreements with StockLayouts.com, istockphoto.com and Logo Works; and have been sending out promo paper samples with CD's that promote using these three companies to "brand" You business. I know my boss (he has nothing to do with design) thought it was a great idea and almost had an "about time" sigh. So expect to see a lot more

If an architect might become an engineer to match the demands of innovation and production, maybe the communication designer must adopt the public relations role.

Stark could be right, but 'people' give design value, good design isnt inherently worth anything (like most things). people who create and consume design need to have the right mentality or design will become worthless.
I think that most things in peoples lives - objects, relationships and goals are more disposable than ever. i think a lot of people lack real systems of appreciation to base value on, thats what religion use to be good for.

a couple solutions:
charge more for less design work.
dont let kids with questionable talent into art/design school just because they can keep paying tuition.
