There's a heatwave of sorts in NY and this is my friends account of his morning commute...
The Bus
This morning I took a later bus the previous two weeks. As I stood sweating in the shade of the bus stop shelter I eagerly anticipated the sight of the bus breaking the horizon line and bringing me all the promises of air conditioned comfort it held within. Unfortunately, as the doors swung open it was not the sound of angels singing that hit me, but rather a blast of hot stale air from within. My promise of a comfortable ride into the Port Authority quickly gave way to the reality that the air conditioning on this bus was non-existent and I would be sweating my ass off on the first leg of my commute this week. The Subway
I'm sure all of you at one time or another have stood on a subway platform in the middle of a NYC heat wave, this is not a place you want to be for very long. So as I walked down the Port Authority tunnel towards the uptown "E" train and heard the train entering the station below I decided to make a run for it. As I hit the platform I could see every car was packed and every door had that one person trying to squeeze their way in....except for one car up ahead. Again, I decide to go for it since I didn't want to sit on that platform for a second longer than I need to. As I angle my body to slide through the closing doors I quickly realize - though too late to do anything about it - why this particular car is close to empty....there are two homeless dudes sleeping on the bench and both have clearly shit themselves! I'm not talking really bad fart smell, I am talking the most disgusting, vile, oppressive smell you could even come close to trying to imagine filling the entire car. You could actually feel the stench on your skin. The few idiots that are in this car with me are literally standing there holding their noses. And as a little extra FU, NO AC ON THIS TRAIN EITHER!!! I make it through to the next stop and jump out into the next air conditioned car. This was truly one day I would have traded the energy and excitement of the big city for the mundane banality of a Secaucus office park. Please pray for me that my commute home is as pleasant as my commute in was terrible.

Since when does public transport have AC in the first place? Aside from maybe the train.
