Getting a fixie built, nice and low maintainence. I always had trouble with geared bikes before – mountain bike's greas kept breaking.....and Londons pretty flat too...
I have a guy in Manchester who's building me one, pretty much to my spec, and delivering it, for £400 – will post pics when I get it NEXT WEEK!

I bought a 1986 Raleigh Technium 440 in perfect condition, original parts (except tires), beautiful for $30 at a pawn shop here in Austin.
It's not fixed but I enjoy my brakes and gears.
Don't pay any more than $100 for a vintage road bike.

tips:
• don't use an aluminum framed bike, get a steel one if possible.• try to get a flip flop hub for the rear wheel, you can re-use the rim/tires etc, but you would have to replace the hub for that of a fixed/flip flop, and re-spoke the wheel, and make sure to get some spacers for the axel.
