Haha... just read this. The gas Smart engine in US/Canada is actually a Mitsubishi.
(from Wikipedia)
"Sales of the diesel engine was restricted in certain markets in favor of the Mitsubishi gasoline unit. Currently, in North America, Smarts are sold with the larger gas engine in the US and Canada, with the smaller, more fuel efficient diesel being sold in Mexico, Europe and other World markets."

I saw a lot of these in toronto

MB owns 85% of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Buses, so thats probably the reason. The Smart CDi in Canada can't be imported here because of EPA reg's.

Damn.. for all you tree hugging hippies on here you'd think there would be a better response to a small car with good gas milage..

i'm all for good gas mileage, but unless you live on a small island or in a village-like area, the smart car is way toolish
- Thats why it has a big brother.. the Smart is for local errands, the truck for everything else..nicnichols

I still recon they are cool if you live in a city. Its a road legal go cart, perfect cutting through gaps in traffic and short cuts across footpaths. I recon I could drive one into my office, would prob fit in the elevator.
