I was wondering what you guys think about racism in the election. Is it a problem for Barack to win these elections because he is black?
- Glitterati_Duane0
He won't win because he's black. He'll win because American voters will determine that he's the best candidate

he's the right candidate on the surface whether or not he's what he's presented as is another story. Obama, as in the entire Obama thing, really isn't that black
- Is that so? What exactly IS black? Colt 45 and and fried chicken? Just curious?Glitterati_Duane
- let me put it this way if he's elected he was elected by white people not black people.********
- Obviously. White people are the majority in America.Glitterati_Duane
- he also doens't speak to black people during his travels and there's like one other black person in his campaign********
- blacks barley vote too, they're intentionally displaced from american politics in general********
- Maybe their just jaded by the fact most politicians ignore them unless it's election time.Glitterati_Duane
- Besides if they would vote just because he's black explain why Sharpton and Jackson never won?Glitterati_Duane
- all i'm saying is black people arn't really a apart of the entire Obama success story if you look at it.********
- Oh yeah no doubt. That's what's good about him in my opinion. He appeals to everyone. Even the ones that don't vote.Glitterati_Duane
- by the way colt 45 and fried chicken is a lot like me actually...and i'm white

No, it's going to come down to ideology, substance, and style like always. Race (and age in McCain's case) are only being used by the media and various pundits (on the left and right) in my view.

To me, it wouldn't be a problem.
But I'm very naive about that since I didn't grew up here.I think there is a lot of racist people full of hate here in the US. and for them this could probably mean their only issue about selecting a candidate.
"I won't vote for him, because he is black"
but then, what is their other option?
a woman.I would imagine that racist people are most likely into machism as well, so they can't really vote for a woman to be president..
What are they going to do? vote republican?
these days, having a republican re-elected probably generated it's own path through racism.. not sure what to call it..Republicanism maybe?
They really have no choice, so my guess is that racist people won't be voting on this election. Which will cancel out any chance of Obama loosing cause he is black, or Hillary cause she is a woman.

those knuckle-dragging mouth breathers will vote for mccain.
- i have sinus issues and tend to breath from my mouth. i assure you i will not7point34

dobs..
do you really think people will re-elect a republican?
after Bush??give them at least 4 years to forget about all this, then they will come back and vote republican again...
there is no way.. how could there be a way unless the elections are rigged?
- I have no faith in humanity anymore.mrdobolina
- they reelected Bush and probably would again if it were allowed.weave

racism is an element to be aware of, to be sure... but Obama can still win
- SigDesign0
In some states, I am sure racism will be a factor, but so will other crazy things like... hey, we think you're a Muslim even though you're not (even if he was I wouldn't care...why is that worse than being Christian? I thought we had freedom of religion)...and because you're not pro-life, we're going to vote for a guy that's going to keep on killing other people in Iraq... how is that pro-life? You could go on and on... this is the first election where I'm going to get involved, cause it may be the last time for a long time that there's a candidate I believe in running for president.
- but but.. christians hang a bleeding jew nailed to a cross on their doors.. that has to be pro life, no?Meeklo
- look... he died, apparently, to save us all from...uh...being damned after we die...SigDesign
- well that was kind. Let us be as HE ! And die (..ish), so that others may do as we. And he.
For the 'other' others. And us.mikotondria3

Great comment from a reader of a right-wing blog:
"Ad Idea for the general election, but don't really
know how to pass on the idea. Have a picture of
Hussain Obama on one side wearing the turbine(the
turbine picture) and to the right of that have a
picture of John Mccain as a younger man in his uniform
or after he was freed. A great ad idea that goes right
to the core of peoples fears. How do I get this idea
to the powers to be or can you just do it for me?"Er..um...ok:

i actually read in the WSJ that (i'm paraphrasing) blue collar, working class democrats are looking at the two candidates, a black man and a white woman and thinking "where's MY representative". yikes.
- WSJ has gone to shit since Murdoch bought it...TheBlueOne

An interesting bit I came across today was that in the 1840's and 50's the abolition movement was deeply tied with the suffragette movement as well. Until there was a conscious decision made to divorce freeing the slaves from the women's right's movements with the movement leaders saying that they could free the slaves easier than they could get women the right to vote and to keep the two issues together would delay ending slavery. Interestingly enough it took fifty more years for women to get the right to vote after slavery was abolished. I think that might be mirrored in how this nomination process has shaken out as well...

- It's weird but some of the most backward countries have a better history towards women compared to the U.S.Jaline

Race could possibly work in Obama's favor. Don't underestimate the power of white guilt.
- pfffft. that'll easily be outweighed by the hillfolk.flashbender

Someone should just kill off the heterosexual, white male.
Everyone that's left would have to find someone else to blame racism on.

McCain will win in a landslide. Strange and sad but true.
With someone like Gore they might have stood a chance. But like Chris rock said: Of course America is ready for a black president, and why not? we just had a retarded one.
