i bought the 430 of craigslist.
iread some so-so reviews, but for $100 it seemed like a great deal.lvl_13 - I used a 430 for a couple of weeks, was pretty good as a fill flash during the day but tended to give the wrong exposure sometimes in dark venues.slappy

it really depends what your focus is... and what camera you've got.
Being that photography is based upon light...I'd suggest that you invest into lighting. Good lighting is what makes the difference...
Also...a very good bye is a Battery Grip.
