A lot of these issues exist in cities where booze isn't legal on the public transport, especially with people who drink loads before they head out... And then in Holland where it is legal to drink on trains, you don't have these problems, unless there's football involved...
I don't think this is going to solve all your problems JOSF...
But I reckon drinking might ;P

Are there many countries left where you can drink on public transport? Foreigners always seem surprised that we COULD drink on the tube system here.
I used to do it, and much as I'd like to continue, I can not.
I can think of loads of reasons to ban it, but I can't think of any reasons NOT to ban it - except that I'm an alcoholic.

I have no idea where it's still legal, but it still happens everywhere. The absolute worst though is night busses, the 24 hr blue line service that pours the wasted souls of the damned home after a night out...
There should be laws against that...
A drunk at his peak or on his way up is 100% better than the detritus that's left after a night out...

The difference is, while the city owns the tube and can decide if they want people drinking or not (just like cinema owners can tell you not to bring food inside), the Labour banned smoking in private pubs and clubs and that's the state going very far.
Even if these places are nicer to sit inside, which most smokers I know agree with :)
