If you don't know what XML is for, why do you need to learn it? Usually you learn something out of necessity :)

It's a mark up language - you can do a lot with it.

Not meaning to complicate things, but you might also want to look into JSON. I use the as3corelib (http://code.google.com/p/as3cor... for serialization/deserialization. It's got a lot of extra goodies too.
I choose JSON over XML anytime that I can. So much easier to deal with. But - it always depends on the project and the requirements I guess.
If you're unfamliar with JSON, it stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It's easy to read, easy to write and makes accessing your loaded data so much easier since you'll be dealing with a native AS object.
On the other hand, XML and E4X are super kick ass...

I'm studying it right now, and I'm liking it. It's really good that you can structure your own-simile database and it works cross-plat and such. Got as far as CSS/XML and I'm going into now XSL and Javascript call-ups.
Question is (I ask more advanced developers), is this worth investing and putting your time into this and play along the learning curve, or is this just going to go away?
That's what worries most. Otherwise XML is a wonderful language.
