is it to work at place where the collective aesthetic is similar or at least jibes with your own?

If it's good design that might be different than your own aesthetic leanings, then stay there for 2–3 years, build your repertoire and move on. Having a stronger, more varied portfolio will then put you in a position where you can more easily find a job where the aesthetic fits well with your own.

I used to think that it was great to be around people who approached design differently, and it probably is if you're young and still searching for your own approach... as you get older, you tend to get more set in your ways and having people around that aren't on the same page only becomes a pain...
I think it's best if you're in a small studio, that everyone shares a similar approach and has a similar mentality/philosophy... it also helps cut down on AD time...

It works well if and when you're going into a place that is looking for what you may bring to the table stylistically. That way, everyone learns and wins.
